Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to repair various types of damage that occurs to netting material used for fish or prawn trawls, purse seines, beach seines or gill nets. It includes the ability to prepare damaged netting material and use net repair tools. This unit applies to individuals who undertake defined routine net mending activities under the direction of a supervisor. All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare netting material for repair
  • Select, check and use required personal protective equipment
  • Arrange netting material and organise repair tools to maximise job efficiency and safety
  • Identify material required for the repair operation by measuring existing material or by reference to a gear plan
  • Remove damaged netting using net repair tools, and dispose of according to workplace and environmental requirements
  • Prepare retained netting ready to accept replacement
  • Shape and strengthen replacement netting with net repair tools according to the gear plan or supervisor instructions before being added to the net
       
Element: Mend holes and rips using twine
  • Identify starting points and secure twine to the netting according to supervisor instructions
  • Use twine to tie knots that make meshes to resemble original netting
  • Secure twine at the end of the repair according to supervisor instructions
       
Element: Mend large scale damage using netting material
  • Identify starting points and secure twine to the netting according to supervisor instructions
  • Join existing and replacement material using twine and knots to resemble original netting
  • Join existing and replacement material using twine and lacing to resemble original netting

Assessment Tasks
